Mescalero Sands New Mexico
Practicing for the Bataan Memorial Death March it was recommended I visit Mescalero Sands to practice hiking in sand. I had been to this location once before, trying to sled as we do at White Sands. Sadly the sand is too fine to sled. But, the people who love off-road vehicles really enjoy the area. I did not see any on my hike, but there were plenty of tracks.
There are over 600 acres of sand dunes to explore. The dogs absolutely loved running free here. I did not run into one person while wandering the area. I only went two miles but covered a lot of area. This place would be absolutely beautiful in the spring. Their website says there are trails, but I failed to see any. It is sand dunes, so I am sure they are pretty much impossible to keep maintained. It takes about 30 minutes to drive to the dunes as they are 45 miles east of Roswell, New Mexico.
You can camp at Mescalero Sands. There are also a few developed picnic areas and one restroom.
